Hot Rolled ASTM A283 Grade A, B, C, D Carbon Steel Coils for Structural Applications

ASTM A283 Grade A/B/C/D Carbon Steel Coils are low-carbon steel coils for structures that comply with the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and are designed for general industry and construction. This series of products covers four strength grades (A, B, C, D), manufactured through a hot rolling process, with excellent formability, welding performance and moderate tensile strength (Grade A-D strength range: 310-485 MPa), which can meet diverse engineering needs. The surface is smooth and uniform, and the thickness tolerance is strict, which is suitable for further processing (such as cutting, stamping, bending), and provides uncoated or customized surface treatment options (such as sandblasting, galvanizing). All products are quality tested by a third party to ensure that the chemical composition (carbon, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus content) and mechanical properties meet the ASTM A283 standard certification.

Overview

ASTM A283 Carbon Steel Coils are available in four grades - A, B, C, and D - each offering different levels of mechanical properties to suit a wide range of applications. These carbon steel coils are known for their affordability, ease of fabrication, and reliable performance in non-critical structural and general engineering applications. The different grades are primarily distinguished by their yield and tensile strengths, which increase from Grade A to Grade D, allowing users to select the appropriate material based on their specific strength requirements.

Advantages

Each grade of ASTM A283 Carbon Steel Coils has its own set of Advantages based on its chemical composition and mechanical properties. Grade A has the lowest strength, with a minimum yield strength of 170 MPa, making it suitable for light-duty applications where lower strength is acceptable. Grade B offers a slightly higher yield strength of 205 MPa, providing a balance between strength and formability. Grade C has a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa, while Grade D, the strongest of the four, has a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa. All grades exhibit good ductility, which allows for easy forming, bending, and welding. They have excellent machinability, making them suitable for various machining operations, and their relatively low carbon content contributes to their good weldability without the need for complex preheating or post-weld heat treatment in most cases.

Application

ASTM A283 Grade A Carbon Steel Coils are commonly used in applications where light structural support is required, such as in the fabrication of non-load-bearing components, furniture, and simple machinery parts. Grade B is suitable for more moderate strength applications, including general structural members in buildings, storage tanks, and agricultural equipment. Grade C finds use in applications that require slightly higher strength, such as in the manufacturing of bridges, pressure vessels, and industrial machinery frames. Grade D, with its higher strength, is employed in more demanding applications where greater load-bearing capacity is needed, such as in heavy-duty structural components and large-scale infrastructure projects.

FAQ

Q: What is the main difference between the grades of ASTM A283 carbon steel?

A: The main difference lies in their mechanical properties, specifically the yield and tensile strengths, which increase with the grade designation from A to D.

Q: Can these carbon steel coils be used in outdoor applications?

A: Yes, they can be used in outdoor applications, but they may require protective coatings such as paint or galvanization to enhance their corrosion resistance, especially in harsh environments.

Q: What is the typical carbon content range for each grade?

A: The carbon content generally increases with the grade. Grade A has a carbon content up to 0.15%, Grade B up to 0.20%, Grade C up to 0.22%, and Grade D up to 0.25%.

Q: Are there any restrictions on the thickness of ASTM A283 Carbon Steel Coils?

A: The thickness can vary depending on the grade and manufacturer, but they are typically available in a wide range of thicknesses to accommodate different application needs.
